Songfacts®:

  • Robin Hood needs no introduction. Although he was a real person, the character who has come down to us through legend is precisely that, legend, in particular he robbed the rich and gave to the poor while evading the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin's name has become synonymous with a certain type of person who steals from the rich and gives to the poor - usually himself. In an interview with Songwriting Magazine a few months before his death, Chas Hodges explained their modern-day version of the legend.

"That came about originally from an idea for a Del Boy character," he said. "John Sullivan, who wrote Only Fools And Horses, we actually wrote a song together called 'This Time Next Year' with the idea of their being a musical about Del Boy, with Chas & Dave to write the music for it. We started on the idea and that was one of them about Del Boy. He was a spiv in the market, so that's how that started. I finished it off but then poor old John died in the meantime. We liked the song so much that we put it on the album."

The song itself runs to a shade over four minutes, and the introduction has a Mediaval feel to it. >>>
