Songfacts®:

  • Childish Gambino's "In The Night" is a sultry exploration of forbidden love. The dancehall-infused track, featuring British R&B singer Jorja Smith and Ghanaian American songstress Amaarae, delves into the murky waters of desire and the fallout from infidelity.
  • "In the Night" is basically a steamy soap opera set to a glitzy dance beat. Gambino is all about this girl, but she's already taken and he's lost in a fantasy world where she's all his.

Jorja Smith shows up and drops a bombshell. Not only is she into the lovesick Gambino, but there's a strong hint she might be pregnant with his kid. And then Amaarae walks in and starts laying down the law. She's found out the two are cheating and confronts Smith about her infidelity.
  • Gambino, Smith and Amaarae wrote the song with Jayla Darden, Kwudi, Ely Rise, Tierra Whack, Kurtis McKenzie and Dahi. Gambino, McKenzie and Dahi produced the track.
  • "In the Night" was released as the second single from Childish Gambino's farewell album, Bando Stone and The New World. The album doubles as the soundtrack to a strange, post-apocalyptic movie of the same name.
