Songfacts®:

  • This mellow, guitar-driven track finds Chris Brown reflecting on a former girlfriend who is struggling to move on.

    Don't check on me
If we're not together, then it's probably for a reason
    Every heartbreak has its season
It ain't always summer in June

The singer has cut his ties with his ex, so he doesn't want her calling him.
  • Justin Bieber takes the baton on the second verse with a similar message to his former girlfriend.

I'm distant 'cause I don't wanna be reached now
Won't let the ghosts of our past weigh my future down

Bieber's relationship had been a toxic one. Now that he's over it, he doesn't want any reminders of his ex.
  • The emotionally charged ballad is the fifth in a long line of collaborations between Brown and Bieber, which started with 2011's "Up (Remix)," and "Next 2 You." The pair also worked together on "Actin' Up" and "Ladies Love Me."
  • "Don't Check on Me" was produced by Sheldon Ferguson and Atia "INK" Boggs. Ink also supplies some guest vocals.
  • Following her feature on "Don't Check on Me," Ink established herself as an in-demand songwriter, producer, and collaborator in the music industry, including working on Beyoncé's Renaissance album and Lil Nas X's "Star Walkin'" single.

Ink is grateful to Brown for her big break. "It gave me so much exposure and another boost of confidence to have a superstar say, 'Hey, we're going to introduce you to the world,'" she told Billboard. "That was one of the moments that led to the unstoppable train I'm on now."
