• Brown told MTV News the song and album title have a couple different meanings. "It can refer to an ex-girlfriend, in terms of you always look forward to moving forward from," he said. "It's also about being a reject in a sense. In me being myself, being able to grow up, me not always hanging around the right crowd or doing the right thing all the time - it's me saying, 'I'm over it. I'm past the bulls--t now.'"
• Brown named the album X for numerical reasons: "My birthday is 5-5-89," he explained to The Boombox. "The Roman numeral X is 10, so it's 5 and 5. 5 and 5 is 10. 8, 9, 10. Also, X is the twenty-fourth letter in the alphabet, and I'm turning 24 when the album comes up, so that's the personal side of it." (Due to management issues and his time in prison X was actually finally released on September 16, 2014 after Brown had turned 25)
  
  "I came up with the concept because it's like the forbidden fruit," he continued. "When you see a vial with the skull and cross bones, it's like don't touch it or don't mess with it. Everybody always ends up messing with it, taking the poison, so to speak, so I wanted to utilize that within my album - have it basically be the reject, but everybody wants it. Me, mentally, with all my trials and tribulations - whatever the case - I might have a bad perception with certain people or a good perception with certain people, but that's all in X."
