Songfacts®:

  • The first track on Chris Rea's Road Songs For Lovers, "Happy On The Road" paints a picture of a truck driver who loves his job.

Thanks to traffic congestion in England, Rea has plenty of time to observe other motorists in his travels, and many of these folks ended up in the songs on the album. In a Songfacts interview with Rea, he said: "A funny thing happened with the truck driver. I'm in a traffic jam and he's singing away with the window open, and this guy couldn't be happier high up there in the truck cab. Yeah, there are some people that are actually 'happy on the road.'"
