Songfacts®:

  • Heartbreak takes center stage in "La Intención" (The Intention), a collaboration between Mexican stars Christian Nodal and Peso Pluma. This ranchera, infused with modern touches, delves into the shared pain of their characters who discover their lover's betrayal.
  • Nodal pours his emotions into the song, expressing the anguish of being deeply invested in a partner who ultimately brings him suffering. Peso Pluma adds an urban edge, delivering a blunt reminder through the lyric, "There's no passion in your life, even if I intend to."
  • While renowned for popularizing "mariacheño," a fusion of mariachi and norteño styles, Nodal temporarily steps out of his signature sound here and embraces Peso Pluma's corridos tumbados music, characterized by driving guitars and brass instruments.
  • The music video for the song, directed by Fernando Lugo, was filmed in Los Angeles. It shows Nodal and Pluma performing the song in a variety of settings, including a bar and a ranch.
  • Released on January 25, 2024, "La Intención" entered the Hot 100 at #92 the following week. It was Nodal's second entry on the listing, following his collaboration with Gera MX, "Botella Tras Botella," which reached #60 in 2021.
  • A yearning for a musical exploration gripped Christian Nodal in October 2023. In Guadalajara, a sense of anticipation hung in the air as Nodal, with a determined glint in his eye, enlisted his friends to help him acquire a unique set of instruments: a tololoche, a docerola, and a requinto. "It got in my head that I wanted to do a corrido tumbado," Nodal recalled to Billboard. "I fell in love with the genre. The good thing is that my neighbors in Guadalajara didn't complain, because the tololoche is a very noisy instrument and my apartment is not very big."

The muse having struck, Nodal, armed with a demo knew precisely who he needed to complete the picture: Peso Pluma. A quick FaceTime call later, and Nodal found himself on a plane to Anaheim, California, for one of Peso's gigs. There, amidst the roar of the crowd, a collaboration was born.

"Hassan [Peso's real name] has a respect for me and my career, and we had great conversations," said Nodal. "The chemistry was there."
