Songfacts®:

  • On December 2, 2019, Cian Ducrot got the news that his best friend, Phil, had taken his life. "Part Of Me" is a moment where he tries to process his loss.
  • "Part Of Me" is a beautiful and moving ballad that captures the pain and grief of losing a loved one to suicide. Ducrot regrets his friend didn't open up to him.

I wish you told me how you felt that night
Now I'll never get to change your mind

Ducrot then sings about his memories of Phil, such as how they used to laugh together.

I'll tell your mother how we used to laugh
But it's never gonna bring you back
    Now you're only a memory

Though he's lost Phil, his friend will always be a part of him.
  • Ducrot tried to write "Part Of Me" for a long time, but capturing the emotions of losing a friend to suicide was a tough task. He knew the song would mean a lot to anyone going through a similar experience, so getting it right was crucial. But one day, something clicked and all the lyrics poured out of Ducrot in a rush.

"Everything I felt, everything I wanted to say and capture about our friendship, the person he was, how he made us all feel and how he left us feeling, it just poured out into this song," he wrote in an email to fans. "I always thought Phily would live forever... hopefully this song can in his place."
  • Ducrot wrote "Part Of Me" with Edd Holloway and Nick Atkinson. The two English songwriters/ producers frequently work with Dean Lewis. Their collaborations with the Australian singer-songwriter include his hit singles "Be Alright" and "How Do I Say Goodbye."
  • Tristan Salvati (Dua Lipa and Angèle's "Fever") helped Ducrot produce "Part Of Me." The gentle, guiding keys and steady drumbeat act as physical forces in the song, propping Ducrot up and keeping him going. The production creates a powerful sound that perfectly complements the emotional weight of the lyrics.

Ducrot discovered Tristan Salvati through Angèle, of whom he's a huge fan. "Tristan did her production and I loved it as thought it was really cool and fresh and I'd never really heard it elsewhere," he explained to Vingt Sept magazine. "I worked with him once on a weekend and after that we really connected."
  • Ducrot released "Part Of Me" as the follow-up single to "All For You" and "I'll Be Waiting" on March 31, 2023. While the two previous songs deal with the aftermath of a broken relationship, this song centers on a different kind of heartbreak: the anguish of someone close becoming "only a memory."
