Songfacts®:

  • The "beauty marks" are the emotional wounds that scar Ciara from past relationships. In 2013, she got engaged to the rapper Future and in 2014 had a son with him, Future Zahir Wilburn. A few months after he was born, they broke off the engagement. In 2015, Ciara started dating Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson; they were married in 2016 and had a daughter the following year. Wilson made her understand that her past relationships are part of her fabric and are nothing to be ashamed of. She told Entertainment Weekly: "These moments sum up the journey of my life. I'm smarter, stronger, and wiser because of them."
  • The music video shows footage from Ciara's wedding, opening with with her and Russell Wilson exchanging vows. Later, it shows footage of Ciara giving birth to their daughter. Ciara directed the video herself.
  • The title track to Ciara's seventh album, she wrote "Beauty Marks" with Skylar Grey, who also co-produced the track.
