Songfacts®:

  • "Dark Vacay" tells the story of Cigarettes After Sex vocalist Greg Gonzalez struggling to maintain a relationship while on tour. The singer conflates hazy memories of drunken stumbles through Prague, the thrill of youthful abandon with the claustrophobic reality of touring alongside a fading romance. He portrays his inner turmoil against a backdrop of haunting ocean-mist guitars.
  • In the opening verse, Gonzalez describes nights filled with drugs and wine, setting a foreboding tone. The chorus acknowledges the darkness looming overhead.

Despite the darkness, Gonzalez longs to embrace the moment, even amidst inevitable doom. The second verse depicts the aftermath of the relationship's collapse, with heavy drinking and a haunting message from a suicide hotline.
  • The title "Dark Vacay" doesn't appear in the lyrics. It offers a clue about the song's themes, but it's open to interpretation. Here are three theories about its meaning.

Theory One: "Vacay" is a slang term for vacation, typically associated with relaxation and enjoyment. "Dark Vacay" flips this idea on its head, suggesting a vacation that's anything but relaxing. It could be a dark, introspective journey or a trip filled with negative experiences.

Theory Two: "Vacay" could also refer to a mental or emotional escape. The song describes Gonzalez struggling with a failing relationship, so "Dark Vacay" could represent his attempt to escape their problems, which ultimately proves unsuccessful.

Theory Three: The word "dark" sets the tone for the song. It signifies negativity, sadness, and emotional turmoil. This darkness permeates the entire "vacation," creating a sense of hopelessness and despair.
  • Gonzalez wrote and produced "Dark Vacay" himself.

"This song is about a romance I had a few years ago," Gonzalez said. "We went on tour together and were lucky enough to go to all these wonderful places, mostly having fun at first. As the tour continued though, everything started falling apart and we ended up breaking up by the end of it. I was left wishing that we were somehow able to see all of the beauty around us before it was too late."
  • "Dark Vacay" was the second single released from Cigarettes After Sex's album X's. The lyrics on the 10 tracks revolve around romance and intimacy as Gonzalez guides listeners through the journey of a four-year relationship from its inception to its eventual decline. The record was recorded in 2023 in the house they once shared.

"It was probably the worst time to record, emotionally," Gonzalez told The Independent. "When I did the vocals, everything was really about to be over, which sounds so melodramatic, but I knew it was finished – there was no coming back. I knew that I had to sing the songs or that emotion would be lost; there was some kind of spirit I'd lose, if I waited longer."
  • I listen to the last message that you left
Then the voice from the suicide hotline

The Guardian suggested the lyric contains a spoonful of poetic license. "It's metaphorical for that intense feeling of: 'I wish I wasn't here today,'" Gonzalez explained. "Then you get past it."
