  • This tale of hope in the midst of pain was very personal to Morgan. She explained in CCM Top 100 Greatest Songs In Christian Music: "I was struggling through a lot of different issues in my life. I had been reading the book Hinds Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard in an effort to get some insight with my own with fear. And I prayed, 'Lord, when will I be free of this sense of dread, of fear?' I started humming the tune and the words followed: The mountains are steep and the valleys low."
  • Karla Faye Tucker, a convicted murderer who had become a committed Christian whilst on death row, asked for this song to be played before she became the first woman executed in Texas since the Civil War.
  • This song won the Gospel Music Association's Dove Award for Short Form Music Video of the Year.
  • Morgan later wrote Point of Grace's 2007 country hit "How You Live (Turn up the Music)."
