Songfacts®:

  • Circa Waves' album Death & Love Pt.1 is a musical love letter penned in the wake of a near-death experience. The nine-track album was born from a frontman Kieran Shudall's ordeal in 2023 when he required surgery for a severely blocked heart artery.

Shudall explained, "I needed this record to process what I went through. A letter to tell myself I would stick around. Most of all, I wanted to make a record for me, with music I love and hopefully music to make kids in their bedroom pick up a guitar and believe they can take on the f---ing world."
  • "Like You Did Before" was directly inspired by those long, contemplative hours in a hospital bed, where Shudall, facing the prospect of major surgery, entertained a rather vivid daydream.

"Just before my heart operation, lying in hospital when life felt uncertain and fragile, I would imagine myself in a packed, sweaty indie club, dancing like my life depended on it," he recalled.
  • The music video, directed by James Hofbauer, captures that same energetic and nostalgic vibe. It's a visual homage to the 2000s New York indie scene, complete with the sweaty, crowded club atmosphere that Shudall imagined in his most vulnerable hour.
  • Death & Love Pt.1 was self-produced by Shudall and engineered by Matt Wiggins, known for his work with Adele, Lana Del Rey, and Glass Animals.
