City and Colour is the alias of Dallas Green, a singer-songwriter from St. Catherine's, Ontario who was previously the vocalist/guitarist for Canadian hardcore band Alexisonfire. The moniker is a play on his actual name: Dallas being a city and Green being a colour. The singer picked the alias because he "felt queasy releasing an album under the name Dallas Green."
In 2008, singer-songwriter Dallas Green told a Toronto radio station that he was indeed named after the Major League Baseball pitcher, manager, and executive of the (almost) same name. The MLB's George Dallas Green played for the Philadelphia Phillies and two other teams before managing the Phillies to their first World Series win ever in 1980.
In 2012, Dallas Green appeared on the popular preschool show Kids' CBC, where he performed his song "The Girl" with slightly different lyrics. The tune was re-titled "The Gift" and was and the new lyrics were about buying presents for Mamma Yamma, a puppet on the show.
In 2008, City and Colour's Dallas Green married Leah Miller, a popular Canadian TV personality. Miller was known as the host of So You Think You Can Dance Canada and also for her previous duties as a VJ on Muchmusic. The couple had been living together in Toronto for several months before their marriage and finally tied the knot in a private ceremony at their home on New Year's Eve 2008.
City and Colour's Dallas Green loves to work with other Canadian artists. Gord Downie from The Tragically Hip appeared on his track "Sleeping Sickness" from 2008's Bring Me Your Love. In 2010, Green also collaborated with Canadian rapper Shad on two songs: a remix of Shad's already-released track "Listen," and a new tune called "Live Forever."
City and Colour's Dallas Green appeared on the Valentine's Day episode of the popular TV show One Tree Hill in 2011. He performed a new version of his song "Northern Wind" that was re-recorded specifically for the show.
City and Colour is known for his excellent live covers. He's regularly performed Low's "Murderer" and Son House's "Grinnin' in Your Face" in concert to great acclaim. He's also performed Neil Young's "Old Man" at the 2009 Juno Awards as part of a collaborative tribute to the city of Toronto.
City and Colour's song "Fragile Bird" is about singer-songwriter Dallas Green's wife, TV personality Leah Miller. Miller suffers from night terrors and the song is about Green's desire to help. The chorus of the song emphasizes the couple's frustrations: "All that I can do is hope she makes it through, through the night."
Dallas Green was 8 years old when his parents first signed him up for guitar lessons. He recalled to Artist Direct: "It was more about trying to find something for me to do. So I started playing before I was even encouraged by what music could mean to me in the future."
