Songfacts®:

  • CJ is a rapper from Staten Island, New York. "Whoopty" became his breakthrough single after it blew up as a TikTok dance challenge.
  • The song title is a saying or greeting used by the LA gang The Brims AKA Hats. The rest of the lyrics are the familiar rap tropes of money, women, drugs and threats to opps.
  • Cypriot producer Pxcoyo came up with the gritty drill beat. It samples "Sanam Re," Arijit Singh's title song of the 2016 Hindi film, giving a Bollywood flavor to the instrumentation. Memo 600's "Esposin Me (remix)" featuring King Von used the same sample.
  • This was the first drill beat that CJ had ever rapped over - his previous material was more melodic. The rapper explained to Billboard the New York drill genre inspired him. "I just felt like I was missing that sound," CJ said. "I was like, you know what, let me try something new."
  • CJ initially self-released the song on July 30, 2020. It netted the rapper a partnership deal with Warner Records, who re-released the track later in the year.
