Songfacts®:

  • Chaelin Lee is a South Korean singer, songwriter and rapper who performs under the stage name of CL. This song is the K-pop superstar's first solo track to be released entirely in English; she previously made guest appearances on the English language tracks "Doctor Pepper" by Diplo and "Dirty Vibe" by Skrillex.
  • CL wrote the song with rapper Asher Roth, and South Korean producer Teddy Park, with the production being handled by the latter.
  • The song marked CL's first-ever entry on the Billboard Hot 100 as the lead artist. The Seoul native previously featured on PSY's "Daddy," which peaked at #97 in December 2015.
  • CL performed the song live for the first time on the September 15, 2016 episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden.
  • The song heavily interpolates the Wu-Tang Clan's 1993 single "Method Man," which was titled after one of the East Coast hip hop collective's members. The accompanying Dave Meyers- directed music video features a cameo from Method Man himself. CL recalled on Genius:

"When Method Man showed up he was like, 'I know how you made the song.' He was like, 'You pulled up my lyrics and just went in there and freestyled.'"
  • CL recalled to Noisey how the track was created:

"This song was made a few years back on New Years Day…I was in the studio with my producer Teddy randomly and we decided to make music. We started watching music videos of Wu-Tang on YouTube and 'Method Man' came on. I went in the booth with the lyrics and started humming this melody which ended up becoming 'Lifted.'"
