Songfacts®:

  • Sir Cliff Richard has a long history of releasing songs around the festive season, scoring two UK Christmas #1 singles as a solo artist – "Mistletoe And Wine" in 1988 and "Saviour's Day" in 1990. This festive mix of a track from his Fabulous Rock 'n' Roll collection is his latest tilt at the Yuletide singles chart. Sir Cliff explained to The Sun:

"The record company wanted one new track (for the album). It's Better To Dream became that track. Steve Mandile and his writing partner changed a few lyrics and Steve gave the track a Christmas feel.

I had a hand in changing some of the lyrics but it's still the same theme, that it's better to dream about the love you can't have than lose it completely.

We removed the main lead guitar and we have a shimmering string intro and it comes creeping in every now and again, and then a tinkly keyboard sound. Now it is a Christmas release."
