Songfacts®:

  • From late November 1963 to early 1964 Cliff Richard and the Shadows were in the Canary Islands filming Wonderful Life, finishing off other scenes at Elstree Studios back in the UK during March 1964. "On The Beach" was actually recorded at Abbey Road studios on November 5th, 1963 for the "Wonderful Life" soundtrack album.

Shortly before the film's UK premiere on July 2nd - "On The Beach" was released as a single (Columbia DB 7305) on June 26th. The film was moderately successful and the single rose to #7 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • During legendary guitarist Hank B Marvin's solo Cliff Richard can clearly be heard noisily coughing, hacking and clearing his throat. Of course - you need to listen to the stereo version under headphones. In 1996 EMI UK released Cliff At The Movies 1959 - 74 - a 2-CD set. For this project "On The Beach" was remixed and remastered. During this process the engineers expunged all of Cliff's coughing and the "cleaned up" version has been utilized on every subsequent Cliff Richard reissue or collection ever since. >>>
