Songfacts®:

  • Unsurprisingly they don't reply. Neither do the stars. Although performed solo, this short number is clearly addressed to another man's wife, always a dangerous proposition, especially in a country where men routinely carry guns and at a time when they were not shy about using them.

This song from the 1969 musical Paint Your Wagon is performed by Clint Eastwood as Pardner. It was composed by Frederick Loewe and written by Alan Jay Lerner. >>>

  • This was released as the B-side of Lee Marvin's UK #1 single "Wand'rin' Star" also from the Paint the Wagon movie.

  • Shane from Dublin Ireland@Lalah, I talk to the band, but they don't listen to me.
  • Lalah from AlaskaThis is one of my most favorite musicals to make it to the big screen. Great songs and funny plot. I thought hearing Lee Marvin sing " I was Born Under a Wanderin' Star" was poignant and yet unbelievable! Lee Marvin singing and it fit the plot! For a time in the 70's I thought Clint Eastwood would start a singing career. Lucky for us he became a great action star and filmmaker.

The songs in this movie are a lot of fun. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band even make an appearance singing "Hand Me Down That Can of Beans" I've called it out at concerts but they turn a deaf ear.
