Songfacts®:

  • This is the title track of Colbie Caillat's Christmas album, Christmas In The Sand. The record contains four original songs and eight holiday standards.

Colbie is from sunny Malibu, California, and her Christmas memories aren't filled with snowmen and sleigh rides, so she wrote about the holiday from a different perspective. In our interview with Colbie, she said that this title track was her favorite of the songs she wrote for the album, adding, "It shows how us Californians occasionally spend our Christmases. And it's really fun, upbeat and quirky. The video for it cracks me up. I'm dancing on the beach with elves and Santa is surfing in the water."
  • Speaking about this bubbly song, Caillat explained to Billboard it is, "about sitting on the beach drinking your cocoa - and that could be hot cocoa or coconut water - and Santa Claus is on a surfboard and walks up the beach and hands you a present, and his reindeer are playing with you in the sand. It's just, like, the tongue-in-cheek side of it."
  • Caillat penned the song with frequent writing partners Kara DioGuardi and Jason Reeves. "Kara started coming up with all these funny lyrics about Santa falling off his surf board and Rudolf playing reindeer games on me," she told Billboard magazine. "It's such a fun song and really shows a silly side of my personality that most people don't see besides my friends and family."

  • Camille from Toronto, OhColbie Caillat's sound is soo sultry and easy to listen to. I live in Ohio and love a white Christmas, but this take on Christmas in the sand is very refreshing and light-hearted; my new favorite tune for the holidays. Re: the video, I totally love Colbie's swimsuit!
