Songfacts®:

  • In this mainly instrumental song, we hear a line being read from The Guest House by the Persian poet Rumi. A slightly longer extract can also be heard on another A Head Full Of Dreams track, "Kaleidoscope." The 13th century poem was also an influence on the rest of the album.
  • The breakdown of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin's marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow, his wife of 12 years, forced him to reassess what was important in life. Martin told The Sun: "The changes made me rethink how I approached life in general. Like how grateful and lucky I am even to be alive, in particular the poem The Guest House, by Rumi."

"This album is based on that poem. Its idea is that you sit with everything and don't run away from it. So that's what I did, and so now I'm in a good place and can handle the harder feelings."
  • Most of the songs on A Head Full Of Dreams were helmed by Rik Simpson (the band's long term collaborator) and Norwegian New York-based duo Stargate (Tor Hermansen and Mikkel Eriksen). This was the only track they didn't contribute towards. Instead, it was produced by long-time Coldplay house engineer, Daniel Green.
