Songfacts®:

  • According to Robert Kimball in The Complete Lyrics Of Cole Porter, the show Paranoia was produced by the Yale University Dramatic Association at the Hotel Taft, New Haven, April 24, 1914. The book, music and lyrics were by Thomas Lawrason Riggs and Porter, although Porter is said to have written all the music and virtually all the lyrics. It was directed by Monty Woolley, who two decades later would inspire Porter to write "It's De-Lovely."
  • Written during Porter's year at Harvard Law School, Paranoia was subtitled Chester Of The Yale Dramatic Association but was originally called Belle Of The Balkans. The music of the title song does not appear to have survived and there is not much to it lyrically, certainly a lot less than the uptempo commercial song of the same name, written by Alexander Baron 70 years later. >>>
