Songfacts®:

  • Rosalie is a 1937 musical comedy for which Porter composed the score. The opening number, sung by Nelson Eddy, is a fairly run-of-the- mill love song. According to Laurence Bergreen in his biography of Irving Berlin, when Porter submitted the original to MGM, it was rejected by head honcho Louis B. Mayer. He re-wrote it, and it became a hit, but he considered it to be inferior. He told Berlin he had re-written the song in hate "and I still hate it." The Tin Pan Alley veteran replied: "Take my advice. Never hate a song that has sold half a million copies." >>>
