Songfacts®:

  • In Cole: A Biographical Essay, Brendan Gill says, along with "Bridget McGuire," "When The Summer Moon Comes Along" is the oldest surviving song for which Cole wrote both music and lyrics. They were composed at 242 York Street, New Haven, Connecticut, in the spring of 1910 during his freshman year at Yale.
  • "When The Summer Moon Comes Along" (or "When The Summer Moon Comes 'Long") does not appear to have been published until 1975, when it appeared in The Unpublished Cole Porter, edited by Robert Kimball, with arrangements by George Terry, musical supervision by Norman Monath and copyrighted by John F. Wharton, Trustee, 1974 and 1975. The song might have been lost forever if it hadn't been found by accident in a large scrapbook that Porter's mother kept of her son's college experiences. >>>
