Songfacts®:

  • "Drinkaby" is a feel-good summery tune about drinking away a broken heart.

    Bye, my baby's long gone
Sadder than a steel in a country song
Raise your glasses to the rafters and help me sing along tonight
    To my drinkaby

"Drinkaby" is a made-up word that rhymes with lullaby or rockabye. While a lullaby or rockabye is a calming song that sends a child to sleep, Swindell drinks whiskey to get over his heartache until he passes out.
  • Jon Pardi, Jordan Schmidt, Hardy and Hunter Phelps wrote the party anthem. From the first time Swindell heard "Drinkaby," he pictured it opening his shows. "The guitar lick in the intro just grabs you and doesn't let you go," he said. "I'm not sure if there is such thing as a fun breakup song, but that's kind of what this is."
  • Swindell released "Drinkaby" as a single on January 27, 2023. It is one of the three new songs included on his deluxe album Stereotype Broken.
  • The uptempo, rock-tinged track has a '90s country feel. Prior to the release of "Drinkabye," there'd already been a resurgence of the '90s country sound as songs like Walker Hayes' "90's Country," Luke Combs' "1, 2 Many," Kane Brown's "Like I Love Country Music" and Swindell's own "She Had Me At Heads Carolina" referenced the music of the late 20th century.

"It reminds me of something that could have come out in the '90s, or come out five years ago or this week," Swindell commented to Taste of Country's Evan Paul about "Drinkaby." "Obviously that sound is popular again... it just had that feeling of, I don't know. I remember being in college and covering these songs and wishing that I had a song like this to play."
  • Zach Crowell produced "Drinkaby," played keyboards, and sang background vocals with Hardy. The other musicians are:

    Ilya Toshinskiy: acoustic guitar
    Sol Philcox-Littlefield: electric guitar
    Devin Malone: electric guitar
    Jimmie Lee Sloas: bass
    Jeff Roach: piano and organ
    Nir Z: drums
