Songfacts®:

  • In this song, Colin Hay sings from the perspective of a man who can't deny his feelings:

    I'm not a pretender
    I have to surrender
    To my secret love

In a track-by-track commentary, he explained: "I've always wanted a song that inspires some kind of gay anthem, so hopefully this will be it."
  • Recorded in Nashville with a string section, this song harkens back to an early '60s sound. Hay explained: "I started singing this little melody that reminded me of the somewhat operatic quality of Mr. Orbison and that period of time. And also Gene Pitney was around in that time. In Scotland, my mother and father had a music shop and I always remember selling those songs and listening to them in a little booth that we had. They had this expansive American production sound - The Righteous Brothers, Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney and a host of others had it. This is my attempt at a song inspired by that."
