Songfacts®:

  • Connie Francis is looking forward to a relaxing summer vacation that includes hitting the beach and going to drive-in movies with her beau. Francis wrote the tune with Gary Weston and Hank Hunter. "When 'V-a-c-a-t-i-o-n' was brought to me, they only had 'V-a-c-a-t-i-o-n in the summer sun,'" Francis explained to DISCoveries Magazine. "That's all they wrote. I wrote the rest of the words and didn't even take credit for it."
  • Hunter also co-wrote the hits "Second Hand Love," "I'm Gonna Be Warm This Winter" and "Drownin' My Sorrows" for Francis.
  • MGM Records thought "The Greatest Sin of All" would be the bigger hit and nearly cast "Vacation" as the B-side until the latter proved to be more radio friendly.
  • Japanese entertainer Alisa Mizuki recorded a Japanese-language version in 2002 for the film Nurse no Oshigoto: The Movie.
  • The Go-Go's performed this as a lead-in to their own, unrelated "Vacation" song on their 1982 world tour.
