  • The title of this song has no question mark, probably because it is a rhetorical question. It was directed at British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the wake of the Falkands War. Many songs have been banned in many countries over the years, but few indeed have been discussed in Parliament. On October 26, 1982, Timothy Eggar, MP for Enfield North, posed the following question to the Attorney General:

'...will [he] prosecute Crass Records under Section 2 of the Obscene Publications Act in respect of its record "How does it feel to be the mother of 1,000 dead?"'.

The Attorney General replied: 'I have considered the record to which my Hon. Friend refers and have decided that its publication does not amount to a contravention of section 2.'

Political content aside, this is about as musical as Crass ever got.
  • In an interview with Richie Unterberger, drummer Penny Rimbaud said: "We'd actually divulged quite a bit of official secrets about the Falklands War. We had a contact who was actually serving in the Falklands, so we actually got a lot of classified information sent to us by him, which we were able, one way or another, to sort of get out."

The band ended up on a radio programme with Tim Eggar, and he got the worst of it: "Basically, he was completely flattened by our arguments. At that point, the Tories withdrew proceedings, which hadn't gotten any further than the director of public prosecutions looking at the case." >>
