Songfacts®:

  • This song originated with David Crowder having a song idea for the phrase "good God almighty." Written in the thick of the COVID lockdown, he wanted the message to be clear that no matter what is happening and what the future holds, God is still God.

Good God almighty, I hope You'll find me
Praising Your name no matter what comes
'Cause I know where I'd be without Your mercy
So I keep praising Your name at the top of my lungs

Crowder told New Release Today that whether we're on the mountaintop or in the wilderness, God is good and on the throne. "To sing this declaration of truth during the pandemic and beyond is what we need," he added. "That's what I needed. I need to be singing His declaration of truth in these difficult moments."
  • The bridge interpolates the anonymously-penned gospel hymn "Praise, Him, Praise Him," which was popularized by Carman.
  • Jeff Sojka and Ben Glover produced the Southern rock-leaning tune incorporating a gospel choir. "This song is just some good old fashioned group singing, said Crowder. "And what I love about that is it is a group of people in harmony. That's what we need and what I'm praying for, some harmony and togetherness."
  • Crowder released the song as the lead single from his fourth studio album, Milk & Honey. It climbed to #1 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs, giving him his first chart-topper either as a solo act, or with The David Crowder Band.
  • The album title is an allusion to the land of natural fertility "flowing with milk and honey" that God promised to Moses in Exodus 3 v 8. At the time, the Israelite people were enslaved and oppressed in Egypt, but God said he would set them free and give them a lush and productive land.

Crowder had the idea of the milk and honey metaphor about the light on the other side of the pandemic before he even started writing the record. "It was great to have a future-oriented theme," he said. "We were looking forward to what's on the other side."
