Songfacts®:

  • During a long prayer at the Monument Street Methodist Church of Baltimore, 45-year-old Elvina Hall's mind began to wander and she scribbled some lines about our need for salvation and the price Jesus paid for it on the flyleaf of her hymnbook. Pleased with her poem, she handed the words to her pastor at the end of the service. Around the same time the church organist John Grape had written a new tune and given it to the pastor, and seeing the two fit together the pastor united them. That is how this beloved hymn came into being.
