Songfacts®:

  • Daði Freyr Pétursson is an Icelandic musician living in Berlin, Germany. In 2020, he took part in Söngvakeppnin (competing to represent Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020) with this funk-driven track. A group of family and friends, credited collectively as "Daði og Gagnamagnið," backed him. They include his backing vocalist sister, Sigrún Birna Pétursdóttir, and musician/dancer wife Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir.
  • After Freyr and his backing group won the Söngvakeppnin, they were a hot favorite to win the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, before the coronavirus pandemic ultimately forced the cancellation of the event.
  • Daði Freyr and Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir's daughter, Áróra, was born in April 2019. Daði explained to ESC Bubble how their baby girl served as inspiration for the song:

"I am talking about the feeling you get in the first few days and weeks where you know that you love this person with all your heart even though you don't really get that much interaction. In the start she doesn't do so much, so I am very excited to know what she thinks about all kinds of things. Now she is almost 10 months and has become such a character so the lyrics don't really apply as much anymore, she is starting to let us know what she is thinking."
  • The song became a viral favorite, soundtracking a major TikTok dance. It was the first Eurovision entry to reach the Top 40 in UK since by Måns Zelmerlöw's "Heroes" peaked at #11 in 2015.
  • Daði also recorded aversion of the song in Icelandic titled "Gagnamagnið." Released on January 10, 2020, the lyrics have an entirely different meaning. According to the singer they "talk about Gagnamagnið coming from the future and outer space to save the world with their brand new dance."
  • Daði is 2.06 m (6 ft 9) tall, equaling the record for the tallest artist on our database – Christano Spiller of "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)" fame is the same height.
