Songfacts®:

  • Like the earlier Wishbone Ash epic song of the same name, this Dan Fogelberg composition, the title track of his sixth album, was inspired by the legend of the Phoenix, although it is clearly written from a personal perspective.

In December 2007, 18 years after its release, Fogelberg was dead from prostate cancer at the relatively young age of 56, but like the Phoenix, he lives on in his music. In 2017, he was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, and there have been a number of tribute concerts. >>>

  • Fogelberg said that this song contains more acoustic guitar overdubs than any of his other songs - so many that it became a bit of a joke with his band.
