Songfacts®:

  • Running to 5 minutes 59 seconds, this uptempo rock number from his 1990 album The Wild Places is Fogelberg's tribute to the first masters of the American continent. As well as an avid conservationist, Dan was a great admirer of Native Americans, whom he saw as living in harmony with and showing a reverence for nature that modern man has lost.

In a 2001 interview he said he felt closely akin to Native American spiritualism: "My church is the forest; my church is the ocean; my church is the wild places. Sadly what the White Race has forgotten... their feet have been separated from the Earth. We're being cut off from the source of our creation." >>>
