Songfacts®:

  • This song features Merriweather's labelmate, the American rapper Wale. Merriweather explained to Pinboard why he hooked up with Wale: "I think he's one of the most brilliant emcees I've ever come across; the way he describes situations is amazing. Plus we're good mates as well as label mates and we toured together for a year with Mark. For those reasons, it was perfect to make music together."
  • Merriweather explained this song to Pinboard: "It's a turbulent time. Looking at everything that's going on in the world today, it can get kind of depressing. The song asks what are we all really trying to achieve, is there a purpose? America has just gone through the most amazing change with Obama, and that feels like a dream come true for the whole world. It was a long time coming, we've come this far, now it's a matter of working out how we can make things even better. What's also being said is, just because there's a little change doesn't mean we can kick back and relax."
  • Merriweather added in an interview with I Like Music that this song, was "based on a collection of ideas that me and Wale had together. We spent a lot of time on the road talking about the gravity of what is happening today in the world, and that reflects in the song."
  • Mark Ronson, who has had a working partnership with Merriweather for a number of years, produced this tune. Ronson discovered the Australian R&B singer songwriter in 2001 when was looking for someone to do some vocals on the debut album release of singer Nikka Costa. Merriweather was the vocalist on two tracks on Ronson's 2003 album Here Comes The Fuzz and four years later on his breakthrough hit "Stop Me."
  • The music video was shot in Brooklyn, New York in late November. Merriweather told Pinboard that shooting the promo was harder work than he anticipated. He explained: "It's funny because we were riding around in the back of this flat-bed truck, and it's one of those ideas that looks great on paper, like yeah, it's gonna be dope. What we didn't factor in is just how freezing cold it was going to be. We're out there in sub-zero temperatures and by the end of it my lips were numb, I couldn't even sing anymore."
