I've Got A Lovely Bunch Of Coconuts

Album: The Best of Danny Kaye (1950)

Songfacts®:

  • This is a novelty song in the true English tradition; written by Fred Hetherton in 1944, it became Danny Kaye's only US chart hit - in 1950. A later recording, by Merv Griffin and Freddie Martin, actually made the Billboard Top 10.
  • Although Hetherton may have written the song in all innocence, not everyone interprets it as about a visit to a fairground. Barbara Windsor of Carry On fame was probably the actress most proud of her "lover-ly bunch of coconuts." >>>

  • Cher from UtahI don’t think it was boobs it was talking about. Coconuts don’t really look like anything on the female anatomy, how ever there is a part of the male anatomy that does look like a couple of coconuts hanging from a tree.
  • Flutnik from West Wokkington FallsIt was also noted in his private diaries, that Calouste Gulbenkian, noted financier and tsitsis knotter, sang this song as he engaged in insider trading of Honus Wagner baseball cards.
  • Flutnik from West Wokkington FallsThis was notorious as the song the Elbonian Army sang so loudly as they entered Gazortaville so vaingloriously.
  • Steve from Whittier, CaI think Freddie Martin with Merv Griffin introduced this, and Danny Kaye covered it. Yeah, and innocent or not, it DOES sound like its about a couple of boobs, and I don't mean the ones working that carnival as clowns.
  • Bailey from Elkmont, Aldoesnt scar make zazu from the lion king sing this when hes got him locked up in that rib cage??
  • Lalah from Wasilla, Akyou can't sing this without smiling. Anybody remember the Monty Python Skit with this song?
  • Reed from New Ulm, MnBorn in the mid-50's...this is actually one of the first songs i ever remember hearing.
