Songfacts®:

  • Dark Water is a country-rock band fronted by Sugarland's Kristian Bush. The other two members are his brother, former Train keyboardist Brandon Bush, and Kristian Bush's friend, jam band veteran Benji Shanks. "Paint It Blue" is a track from the band's self-titled debut album.
  • The arrangement between the three is that Shanks and Brandon Bush compose the music, leaving the lyrics and topline melody for Kristian Bush. This song came out of the second group of songs the trio worked on.
Once the frontman heard the music, he came up the idea of a ghost that reassures you in your dreams that everything's going to be okay.

Bush explained to Billboard the phantom tells you how to negotiate your way through your troubles by means of "all sorts of interesting rhymes and thoughts and just keeps upping the game."

He added: "It's a little bit of a puzzle, lyrically, that unfolds the more you listen to it."
