Songfacts®:

  • This Sounds Like Life track was written by two members of the Country band Shenandoah: Jimmy Yeary and Mike McGuire, together with Billy Ryan. It's a tribute to their former bass guitarist Ralph Ezell, who died of an apparent heart attack in 2007.
  • Worley knew Ezell, as he played bass on Darryl's early demos. However apart from giving him an opportunity to pay tribute to the former Shenandoah band member, the song was also a means for him to be reconciled with his estranged baby brother. Worley explained to The 9513: "My younger brother and I had gone through a really tough time together. It had to do with our parents and some real personal stuff that was hard. He and I had always been close. We hadn't talked in a long time. When I heard the second verse of the song, it's like they wrote it just for me and didn't even know it. I remember the closing part of the song was still ringing on my CD player when I picked up the phone and called my brother. I'm thankful to say that we are close again and he's back on the road with me, selling merchandise and just being a brother."
