Songfacts®:

  • As Dave Mason likes to point out, Paul McCartney wasn't the first white guy to sing with Michael Jackson. The King of Pop was recording the album Triumph with his group The Jacksons at Hollywood Sound studios in Los Angeles at the same time Mason was working on his album Old Crest on a New Wave. When Mason realized he needed someone to sing some high parts on this song, he asked Jackson, who delivered an unmistakable performance. Jackson was familiar with Mason's work: he and his brothers performed Mason's song "Feelin' Alright" on a 1971 Diana Ross TV special.
  • This song was written by Mason's longtime collaborator Jim Krueger, who also wrote Mason's biggest hit, "We Just Disagree." The uptempo tune belies the lyric, which is about girl who is looking for salvation in a cold, cruel world when her dreams come crashing down. Michael Jackson's "save me, girl" interjections change the meaning a bit, as the main vocals find the girl asking for help.
  • Had this song been released in the Thriller era, it surely would have become a bigger hit, but it stalled on the charts at #71 and Mason's label, Columbia Records, dropped him from the label. In 1981, Mason teamed up with this song's writer, Jim Krueger, to record some beer commercials for Miller, and the pair then embarked on an acoustic tour. Mason got a new record deal with MCA and released the album Two Hearts in 1987, and in 1993 he joined Fleetwood Mac, performing on their 1995 album Time. Krueger, just 43 years old, passed away in 1993 from complications from pancreatitis.
