Songfacts®:

  • "Madman's Eyes" was inspired by the epidemic of gun violence in America. "The song's not directly about my political views on guns, because it's not really political, it's just, 'Are you insane or are you not insane?'" he explained to GQ. "I have a lot of friends who have guns and love their guns. I don't have a gun. I never had a gun. But that song is my reaction to how insane the news is. This bizarre idea that keeps coming up. It's like, 'Let's not make it political just 'cause another 10 people got mowed down.'

I don't give a f--k about the politics. I'm just saying, I don't want people to get shot for going to school or for going to the office or for going to university or for going to the mall."
  • The band started performing "Madman's Eyes" in 2021, two years before it was released on their album Walk Around The Moon. That's often the case with DMB songs - they work them out on stage long before they go into a studio to record them.
  • This is one of the more musically dense Dave Matthews Band songs, with a full string section bringing forth a sense of chaos and urgency.
  • The Walk Around The Moon was largely made during the pandemic. It was released in 2023, 30 years after their debut album, Remember Two Things. The band still had three of their five original members: Matthews, bass player Stefan Lessard and drummer Carter Beauford.
