Songfacts®:

  • David Omoregie was born in the Brixton area of South London and raised by his mom with his two brothers in nearby Streatham. Here he talks about his tough upbringing on the streets where knife crime is rampant.
  • The song opens with sirens and news reports on London's knife crime epidemic. It continues with a long verse where Dave bares his soul about getting involved in illicit activities, London's dangerous nature, his identity as a Nigerian immigrant, and the abuse of women.
  • Dave drops some lines about having matured from his gangbanger days.

As I grow older, change of perspective
I gotta stay loyal to my girl

Near the end of his verse, Dave goes into full confession mode; he talks a cappella about glorifying street life in his past music, which he now regrets.

I'm so ashamed of how I used to get figures
Sell you a dream like the road ting's lit
  • The outro is a recording of Dave's mom, Juliet, recounting the distressing story of when she and her husband left Nigeria at an early age to live in England. When Dave was just a few months old, the authorities deported his father to Nigeria for having the wrong visa. They allowed Juliet to stay but she was left homeless with three babies to take care of.
  • Dave co-produced the track with Joe Reeves (Juice WRLD's "Man Of The Year," 6lack's "Know My Rights").
  • Dave's mum bursts into tears in the outro as she recounts her treatment as an UK immigrant. The rapper told The London Times it came from a conversation between them at his home. Dave was recording their chat as he was looking for inspiration for this album, and as she shared her harrowing story, she just started crying. "Sometimes I wonder if it was right to include it," Dave said. "But that pain? My mum is a good person. A nurse. She don't trouble nobody."
