Songfacts®:

  • Dave recruited four uncredited guest rappers for this gospel-infused track. Frequent collaborator Fredo, up-and-coming Manchester MC Meekz Manny, rapper Giggs, and grime great Ghetts each spit an uninterrupted verse about making it out of their tough and deprived backgrounds.
  • Dave steps in for the fifth verse. He talks about being raised in difficult circumstances by his mom after his father was deported to Nigeria for not having the right visa.
  • The London rapper recorded the song for his We're All Alone in This Together album, which finds him reflecting on such topics as his family's turmoil, racism, and the abuse of women. Said Dave in an Instagram post: "We were born of the water. But tried in the fire. We're all alone in this together."
  • Dave has previously collaborated with all the other artists except for Meekz Manny.
  • The intro and bridge are samples of black choir group Florida Mass Choir's track "Have You Been Tried In The Fire" from the 1982 album Lord, You Keep On Proving Yourself To Me. That song alludes to 1 Peter 1:7 in the New Testament, where St. Peter wrote:

"That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ."

St. Peter is saying that as gold is heated, impurities float to the top and can be skimmed off. Likewise, our trials refine and strengthen us, making us appreciate a life more useful to God.
  • Dave co-produced the track with:

His go-to beatmaker and childhood friend Kyle Evans.

Dominic Maker of the electronic music duo Mount Kimbie.
  • Dave took home Best Hip Hop/Rap/Grime Act award at the BRIT Awards 2022, where he also closed out the show with a pyrotechnic-fueled rendition of "In The Fire." Fredo, Meekz, Giggs, and Ghetts joined him on stage to perform their respective verses along with a gospel choir.
