Songfacts®:

  • Over strummed guitar riffs and heavy beats, Dave and Central Cee exchange verses about cars, girls, and stacking cash. The track's title pays homage to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van, a vehicle used to transport people and goods.
  • The song is the first proper team-up for Dave and Central Cee, although you might have caught both MCs on AJ Tracey's 2016 "Spirit Bomb (Remix)." Dave also produced "End of the Beginning" on Cench's 2022 mixtape 23. The two are tight, known to be good mates, and they've shown love for each other time and time again. Just peep Cench's 2022 tune "Ungrateful," where he shouts out Dave as one of his inspirations.
  • "Sprinter" kicks off with Cench, still new to that wealthy lifestyle but catching on quick. He's only a year with these millions.

On the chorus, Dave and Cench flex about how many partners they fit in moving rides. They squeezed nine girls in a Sprinter.

In the second verse, Dave compares his ride to Michael Jackson. The outside's white, like MJ's skin condition, but the inside's brown, representing his roots and complexion.

In the third verse, penny-pinching Cench tries to snag his girl's Netflix password. She's Turkish-Cypriot with Brazilian curves; he wants her, while his bro wants her affiliate. She doesn't dig Central Cee's talk about women but he swears she's twisting his words.
  • Dave takes the fourth and final verse, cruising in his G-Wagon, all for the nyash (Nigerian slang for female backsides).

I'm in the G63, the car hug me like a friend through twist and turns
Man livin' for nyash and dyin' for nyash

But hold up, the lyric throws a curveball because it contradicts his collab with Stormzy, "Clash." There Dave dropped some wisdom, warning guys to keep their dignity intact.

Don't get caught up for pus, don't die for nyash

On "Clash," it's about protecting their rep and not letting women take advantage.
  • Central Cee dropped a sneak peek of the track on his Instagram story, March 18, 2023. He shared a screenshot of a conversation with Dave where the "Starlight" rapper sent him an audio file. The caption tagged Dave and read, "Oh no."

"Sprinter" officially dropped on June 1, 2023, released by London-based labels Neighbourhood Records and Live Yours.
  • The music video takes us through the streets of London and the scenic beauty of the south of France. Keep an eye out for a cameo from the Nigerian-born artist Slawn. It's a visual feast, with lavish boats, fancy rides, seaside mansions, and stunning ladies everywhere you look.
  • "Sprinter" is the lead single from Central Cee and Dave's joint EP Split Decision. Its release marks both rappers' 25th birthdays on June 4 and June 5, respectively. Dave marked his 24th Birthday with a freestyle of that title but dropped the song three weeks later on June 24, 2022.
  • The song debuted at #1 on the UK Singles chart, becoming Dave's third chart-topper following 2018's "Funky Friday" with Fredo and 2022's "Starlight." It was Central Cee's first visit to the summit, having previously peaked at #2 with "Doja" in 2022.
  • The first seven days of "Sprinter" saw the track accumulate 13.4 million streams, making it the biggest week of streams for a rap single in the UK ever. This surpassed Stormzy's "Vossi Bop," which racked up 12.7 million in its opening week in May 2019.
  • When "Sprinter" reached #5 on the Canadian Hot 100 dated June 17, it became the highest charting British hip-hop single of all-time in Canada, surpassing M.I.A.'s 2008 song "Paper Planes," which reached #7.
  • "Sprinter" won Song Of The Year at the UK's 2024 Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards. Central Cee also took home the award for Best Male Act.
