Songfacts®:

  • Coca-Cola's global 2014 FIFA World Cup anthem is performed by the Brazilian-born, American-raised singer and 2012 US X Factor finalist David Correy with the Brazilian percussion troupe Monobloco. Correy told Billboard magazine that he immediately identified with the song. "You can just hear the emotion pouring out of my vocals," he said. "Young kids need something to believe in. that's what makes us feel like we're a part of something. That's what this meant for me. I've never felt so proud to be a part of something. It represents me so well." The tune was debuted live by Correy on September 12, 2013 on Corcovado Mountain above Rio de Janeiro.
  • The track was penned by the American songwriting team Rock Mafia, who created many of Miley Cyrus' early hits and produced by Brazilian-born Mario Caldato Jr., who has worked with Beastie Boys, Jack Johnson, and various Brazilian artists including Seu Jorge and Bebel Gilberto.
  • Coca Cola's previous official World Cup anthem was K'Naan's "Wavin' Flag," which was chosen as their campaign music for the 2010 soccer tournament. "We always try to bring to light our campaign ideas through music and in 2014 we're talking about the World Cup and bringing the world together," the brand's Director of Global Entertainment Marketing told Billboard magazine. "That is what the song was meant to do from a lyric perspective. From a music perspective, we wanted the music to stay very authentic to Brazil, but in an original way that would resonate with an audience internationally…we're taking that rhythm of Brazil and pairing it with just a great mainstream song."
  • The single's cover photo spotlights Correy's tattoo on his back that shows a Brazilian flag covering a hand making the metal horns sign.
  • Several other versions in Spanish and Portuguese were subsequently released, featuring Gaby Amarantos, Carlos Vives and Wisin of the reggaetón duo Wisin y Yandel.
  • Aloe Blacc was one of the many other artists to record the song. "I want my music to inspire people to dance, to smile, to sing," said Blacc of his version. "The more songs that I can do that make people happy, the better I'm contributing something positive to the world."
