Songfacts®:

  • This is the lead single from British singer-songwriter David Gray's eighth studio album, Draw The Line. The song was played for the first time on BBC Radio 2's Ken Bruce show on Tuesday, July 21 2009.
  • Gray said that the image of Saddam Hussein being pulled out his spider hole in 2003 inspired in part the lyrics for the song. He explained: "I've been a fugitive from life, I've been hiding in my bubble. And I had this image of Saddam Hussein being pulled out a hole in the ground. That's where the 'mud streaked fugitive' line came from. It's about hiding from life, from yourself."
