Songfacts®:

  • Meece explained to CCM Magazine presents 100 Greatest Songs In Christian Music that this song talks about why Jesus came to earth in the first place. Said Meece: "The most important thing in the song 'We Are the Reason' is how important it is to realize that He died for each and every one of us. The individual nature of Christ's sacrifice is something we need to really focus on."
  • Meece admitted in the same interview that in writing the song, he really didn't know what he was doing. He explained: "It's not my intellect that did it; it wasn't my profound theological thought. I was a piano teacher, I never went to Bible college or seminary or anything. I was probably the last person in the world anybody would expect to write a song as profound as that one-not to sound pompous at all. I mean, it just kind of wrote itself. When I took it in and played it for Brown Bannister, my producer, he was the one who recognized it for what it was. I really didn't know; it was just one of those things that God plopped in my lap."
