Album: The Grand Departs (2014)

Songfacts®:

  • This instrumental by David Nelson lives up to its name in more ways than one. It was written for The Grand Departs, part of the 2014 Hebden Bridge Piano Festival. According to the people behind it, a team of "Calderdale's most resilient cyclists" was recruited to pull a grand piano from Mytholmroyd up Cragg Vale Road to the top of Blackstone Edge, "the longest continuous ascent in England." This has actually been included in the Tour de France (which although first held entirely in France now has stages in other countries).

A special vehicle was designed to accommodate this innovative event; the PianoPorté is around 20 feet long, and pulled both the piano and the pianist while he was performing the work. >>>
