Songfacts®:

  • The first new music to be released by Daya since signing with Interscope Records, this finds the songstress regretting leaving her boyfriend for someone new:

I'm missing you, I'm missing you
What the hell did I do? Did I do?
Messing with someone new, thinking I wanted to
Turns out I don't want new, I want you

Daya said: "'New' really is the start of something new. It's a sharper, more direct perspective coming from me. No more talking in circles around my feelings. It's honest, it's raw, and it's emotionally intense. I want it to be something people can cry to or scream out or dance sporadically to. Mainly, something that wakes them from a certain numbness and forces them to feel."
  • Daya wrote the song with LelandBrett McLaughlin, James Newman, Sir Nolan and StarGate. She told Genius:

"We loved the title of 'New' and wanted to fit that in to the concept somehow – we thought it'd be really interesting and unexpected to flip it to rejecting what's new instead of embracing it."
