  • This is the third single taken from the Canadian electronic artist Deadmau5's third production compilation album, 4x4=12. Annie Mac debuted the song on her BBC Radio 1 show on October 22, 2010.
  • The song features vocals from Sofia "Sofi" Toufa. It was originally an instrumental track entitled "You Need A Ladder," but vocals were added on afterwards, hence the title.
  • Sofi is the girlfriend of Deadmau5's best pal, Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee. "We're just a little family, I guess, so when I'm out in L.A., I'm living there and working with them and just hanging out basically, and it just so happens, she can sing a note!" Mau5 told MTV News regarding Sofi's contribution: "I asked her if she wanted to do vocals in the track, and she obliged, and I've done a number with her now."
  • Deadmau5 explained the meaning of the arithmetically incorrect album title to MTV News: "My math sucks," he explained. "I was talking on Ustream, and I was trying to explain to people about my setup, and I was like, 'Yeah, it's in four banks of four, and that equals 16,' and they were like, 'Dude, that's 12'! Everyone started saying it over and over again, and it just caught on."
  • The song won the Dance Recording Of The Year award at the 2011 Juno Awards.
