Songfacts®:

  • Shadow to Shadow, Dean Madonia's Frankenstein takes the classic tale from Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus, and turns it into a two-disc progressive rock opera. Adding his own touch to the story, Madonia makes a change in the narrative by telling it from the point of view of the monster who is still alive 200 years later. The fiend recounts the adventure as a warning sign to a genetic researcher about to make the first human clone.

"Shadow to Shadow" is the sixth track on disc two of the rock opera. Madonia took the title of the song as the name of the whole project because he thought it best described the monster's plight. The tune speaks about how the monster is constantly being judged and mistreated by people because of his hideous appearance. In our interview with Madonia, he revealed the meaning behind the title: "The shadow to shadow thing is the monster constantly having to stay out of people's sight and hide in the shadows, and it's kind of the way he lives from shadow to shadow."
