Songfacts®:

  • There is more than a hint of paranoia in this Def Leppard rocker, where lead singer Joe Elliott has been so tormented by a girl, he's not sure what's real and what is only in his mind. In the end, he tries to convince himself of his sanity, repeating, "I am not fooling myself."
  • Def Leppard's producer, Mutt Lange, got a writing credit on this song along with Elliott and guitarist Steve Clark. Lange's stamp is all over it, with an acoustic intro that builds into an explosive chorus.
  • The video has lots of gothic symbolism and plenty of fire, which plays up the album title. Directed by David Mallet, it shows Elliott bound to the band's triangle logo, traversing dark passageways, and taking part in some kind of ritual. There are also shots of a mysterious woman playing a harp even though that instrument is nowhere in the song; that woman is Perri Lister, who showed up in a few Billy Idol videos when they were dating.
