• Lovato is testifying to her renewed perspective about knowing her worth after years of struggling with negative feelings. She wrote the song to remind her listeners, and herself, that they're not alone with their insecurities.
  
  "The message is about self-acceptance and self-love," she told Apple Music. "I know this is something so many young people struggle with, and I hope this song reminds them of their own self-worth."
  
  "It's an anthem... It talks about how hard we are on ourselves and this, the negative self-talk. You know, how easily we can listen to that," Lovato added. "But when is loving yourself gonna be enough?"
  
  "We really are all we have," she concluded. "At the end of the day when we enter this world and when we leave this world, our souls are all we have. It's important to respect them, treat our bodies like temples, and love ourselves as much as possible."

• The official video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis (Ariana Grande, Drake, Nicki Minaj), brings the lyrics' uplifting message to life. The clip opens with a battle between alter-egos, with Demi emerging victorious over her dark side, as her zen inner self watches on. We then see Demi confronted by images from her past such as former tourmates Jonas Brothers, Barney co-star Selena Gomez, and her ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama. The visual also alludes to her own hospitalization following her opioid overdose, as she reaches out to someone on a stretcher. By the end of the clip, Lovato is ready to leave her past behind and start a new chapter of her life.
• Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker teamed up with Demi Lovato to give "I Love Me" a pop-punk makeover in 2020. The new version is accompanied by a throwback lyric video centered around MySpace. It shows how Lovato and Barker's pages on the once-popular social media website would have looked like back in its heyday. According to the clip, Lovato once had 139,475,967 friends!
• Lovato has form for dabbling with rock music. Back in 2010 she supplied guest vocals on We The Kings' single "We'll Be a Dream."
