  • Demi Lovato and actor Max Ehrich first revealed their relationship in March 2020, and got engaged four months later in Malibu. "I knew I loved you the moment I met you," Lovato wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post. "It was something I can't describe to anyone who hasn't experienced it firsthand but luckily you did too."

On September 24, 2020, it was reported that the pair had called off their engagement. Just a week later, Lovato released this somber song with lyrics detailing how she's coping with a broken heart. Ahead of the single's release, the singer wrote on social media, "Music is always there for me."
  • It hurts to breathe
I don't have much, but at least I still have me
    And that's all I need

Lovato and producers Chloe Angelides and Sean Myer originally wrote the emotive piano ballad with the topic of self-loving during a tough time. Following her breakup with Elrich, Lovato changed the lyrics of the verses to channel her feelings about the split while retaining the empowering hook.
  • Lovato's team were caught off-guard as they didn't see the song coming. Reacting to Lovato posting the single on social media, they scrambled to make it available to stream and download on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Her manager Scooter Braun commented: "Now let's just get it up on streamers," coupled with a red heart icon and smiley face with sweat emoji.
